Human Kinetics

This guide contains descriptions of and links to resources for students completing assignments and doing research in Human Kinetics.

Research Tips

  • Only use words that add value to the search (don't type in full phrases or questions that include words like "are" or "the")

  • “Truncating” words can help expand search results. Place an asterisk at the end of the root of the word:  sociali* will find socialize + socialization + socialized

  • Multi-word concepts, such as “physical therapy”, need quotation marks to search the words as one phrase

  • You can use three words called Boolean Operators to improve your search: AND, OR, NOT

Brainstorming for Keywords of a Research Topic

First, write down the research topic and identify the key terms in the statement or question:

Is there equal access to sport participation in Canada?

Then, brainstorm similar keywords or phrases that can be used in a search engine:

"sport participation" "equal access" Canad*
sport cost
"physical activit*" affordab*

Try searching with different combinations of these keywords in the library search engine or article databases.
