Places to Search

If you cannot find a particular eBook in OCtopus, or you want to find more eBooks on a topic, try searching in these databases.

Tip: Having trouble finding a specific journal article? Start by searching for the journal title in the list of e-journals below, then browsing the full-text access link for the year, volume, and issue that your article was published in. You can also search within a specific publication for the title or author of the article.

If OC Library does not have access to the resource you need, try filling out an inter-library loan form. Library staff will obtain a copy from a different college or university for you to use.

Tip: don't leave this to the last minute! This could take a few days (online resources) to up to two weeks (print resources).

1. Use quotation marks to search for phrases.

2. OR finds results with either one term or the other, not necessarily both. Be sure to have OR in capital letters.

3. Truncate words with an asterisk (*). Communicat* finds communication, communicator, communicate, etc.

4. AND finds results with all keywords. This dropdown can be changed to OR as well.

5. Get to advanced search with this link. It also appears under basic search.

6. Search for your keywords in a specific field. If unselected, it searches every field.

7. Add additional rows if needed.

Tip: in other search interfaces, many of these techniques will still work! Try using Boolean in another system or finding out what the truncation symbol is.

8. Methods to access the item will be available here, be it "PDF," "Full Text Finder," or "Retrieve Catalogue Item." Follow these links to get the item.

9. This will contain the information about the journal that you will need for citations, such as its title, and the volume and issue of the article.

10. If the item has a DOI (Digital Object Identifier), it will be located here.

11. Save items for later in the folder. You will need to create an EBSCO account in order to save items from one search session to another.

12. The citation tool is not perfect, but it will provide you with the needed information for your references.

13. The permalink button will provide you with a stable URL; use this for saving/sending links rather than the URL in the address bar.
