BUAD 209: Business Law

This library guide will provide you with information to complete your Canadian case law or legislation research.

The purpose of this guide is to pull together useful information, tutorials, videos and links to help you with your Canadian Law and Legislation research.

Navigate through the tabs above as needed while you work through your project.

The intent of this guide is not to show you all the resources that may be used. Rather, this guide identifies quality resources and provides direction for your research.

Legal Research Process

  1. If you have been given a fact situation, read it thoroughly FIRST and start your keyword list.
  2. BEFORE searching for case law, it's a good idea to use secondary research to define and understand the issues you will be researching. Secondary research allows more natural language searching but will often point you in the direction of useful case law and applicable legislation. Try journals, blogs, newsletters, newspapers, and digests. Leading textbooks are often used to understand an area of law as well.
  3. Do your primary research by finding case law and/or legislation that applies to the issue or fact situation you are researching.
  4. Keep your research current by noting up
  5. Don't forget to cite your sources.
