Sharing household tasks: Teaming up during the COVID-19 pandemic
The purpose of the third iteration of the Canadian Perspectives Survey Series (CPSS) which ran from June 15 to 21, 2020 is to explore the re-opening of economic and social activity. Using data on family and caregivers, this article examines how household chores are shared between men and women in a couple, during confinement. The data covers persons aged 20 and over in Canada who were married or in a common-law relationship at the time of the survey. Respondents living in the same household with a spouse or partner of the opposite sex are considered.
The COVID-19 pandemic and life satisfaction in Canada
The COVID-19 pandemic has had unprecedented impacts on many key aspects of life, such as health, social connections, mobility, employment and incomes. Life satisfaction provides the best available umbrella measure of the combined effects of these changes on the well-being of Canadians. Using population-representative samples from two Statistics Canada surveys, this study compares the life satisfaction of Canadians before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.
COVID-19 Impact Analysis and 2020 Outlook: The Retail Services Price Index
This article contributes to a series studies of COVID-19 impact on Canadian industries, with focus on the Retail Services Price Index (RSPI). The study analyzes the movements of RSPI during 2020 pandemic by subsectors, including clothing stores, grocery stores, and electronic stores, etc. It also compares different responses of retail sectors during 2020 pandemic and during 2008-2009 recession. Based on the in-depth analysis, the article also provides an outlook of the price index trend for the year 2020.
Vulnerabilities related to COVID-19 among LGBTQ2+ Canadians
Using data collected in 2018 from the Survey of Safety in Public and Private Spaces, this article identifies areas of vulnerability to disproportionate impacts of COVID-19 on the LGBTQ2+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, Two-spirit and other diverse sexual and gender identities) population. Pre-pandemic differences in secure attachment to housing and financial security relative to the cisgender heterosexual (non-LGBTQ2+) population, could mean that LGBTQ2+ Canadians will have more difficulty coping with the additional social and economic stressors of COVID-19.

Impact of COVID-19 on businesses majority-owned by visible minorities, third quarter of 2020
Different communities in Canada have been impacted in various ways by the COVID-19 pandemic. Using the data from the Canadian Survey on Business Conditions, a comparison was made to assess the impact of COVID-19 on businesses majority-owned by visible minorities. Differences were noted in certain areas: these businesses were more likely to experience a decrease in revenue, have less liquidity, be unable to take on more debt, and be approved for funding or credit. This article further explores the impacts these businesses are experiencing during these unprecedented times.

Impact of COVID-19 on small businesses in Canada, third quarter 2020
As a result of the widespread measures taken to contain the spread of COVID-19, the Canadian economy contracted. By the end of May, the Canadian economy had been transformed by COVID-19 and many businesses had begun to adapt to the new reality by shifting to teleworking, reducing hours, laying off staff, applying for government funding or seeking rent relief. As parts of Canada were exposed to a second wave of COVID-19 and other parts were in recovery, Statistics Canada ran the Canadian Survey on Business Conditions to better understand the ongoing impacts on businesses. Based on the results of the survey, while the majority of businesses in Canada were impacted, smaller businesses with 1 to 99 employees were slightly more affected.
COVID-19 and the Beef Supply Chain: An Overview
This article presents an analysis of the COVID-19 pandemic impact on the Canadian beef supply chain, from Ranch to Slaughter House, from Wholesale to Retail and from domestic market to Imports/Exports. The study uses various data sources from Statistics Canada and Agriculture and Agri-food Canada (AAFC) with main focus on wholesale services prices. This publication also uses data from the product-based development project for the Wholesale Services Price Index (WSPI) using the North American Product Classification System (NAPCS). This project is part of the Statistics Canada's user-centric modernization initiative focusing. The product-based WSPI data are not yet released to the public. Note: The WSPI represents the change in the price of wholesale services, which is defined as the margin price (or margin). The margin is the difference between the average purchase price and the average selling price of a given product. It is not a wholesale selling price.
COVID-19 death comorbidities in Canada
Using the latest data from the Vital Statistics - Death Database, this article presents information about the most common comorbid conditions in COVID-19 deaths, as well as the extent to which these conditions differ by age groups. Comorbidities are defined as chronic and acute conditions, diseases, disorders, and complications appearing on the medical certificate of cause of death where COVID-19 was involved in the death.
Labour market impacts of COVID-19 on Indigenous people: March to August 2020
This paper uses monthly data from the Labour Force Survey (LFS) to examine the labour market impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on Indigenous people from March 2020 to August 2020. Trends in employment, unemployment and labour force participation are examined by Indigenous identity as well as by sex and age group.
COVID-19 mortality rates in Canada’s ethno-cultural neighbourhoods
This article examines the differences in COVID-19 related mortality rates across different ethno-cultural neighbourhoods in Canada. The differences in age-standardized mortality rates by proportion of population groups designated as visible minorities are compared for Canada and selected provinces and census metropolitan areas to understand whether or not communities with higher proportion of population designated as visible minorities are reporting higher COVID-19 related mortality rates.
COVID-19 impacts on civil aviation: An international comparison
This study compares the international impacts on civil aviation as a result of COVID-19. It analyzes the trend of passenger volumes for the first half of 2020, how far they dropped and how quickly they are recovering. Another section compares passenger load factor for selected countries. Finally, it provides an outlook on recovery in the air transportation sector.

This article examines changes in new home prices in Canada for the 27 surveyed census metropolitan areas (CMAs) captured in the New Housing Price Index and compares the ranking of cities based on prices six months into the pandemic (August compared to February).
Self-employed individuals, self-employment income and the post-COVID-19 financial strain
Although the number of self-employed individuals has remained largely unchanged since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of the self-employed are likely to remain under severe financial strain. This article looks at the unincorporated self-employed more broadly and highlights another important factor that will likely have a large impact on their financial well-being: whether or not the self-employed individuals also have T4 earnings.

This article examines the mental health outcomes (i.e., self-rated mental health, change in mental health since physical distancing began, and severity of symptoms consistent with generalized anxiety disorder in the two weeks prior to completing the survey) of participants in a recent crowdsource questionnaire who belong to population groups designated as visible minorities in Canada.
Overtime work among professional nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic
The novel COVID-19 pandemic has been expected to impact the workloads of health care workers such as nurses, but to date, the magnitude of such changes has not been quantified. Compiling data about nurses’ working conditions is important because excessive workload and overtime hours have been linked with decreased well-being and with implications for the long term health of workers and for health service delivery. To shed light on this issue, this study reports on the changes to nurses’ overtime work hours before and after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Excess mortality in Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic
COVID-19 has had and continues to have a clear impact on communities and families across the country. Many have lost family members and friends to the pandemic. In terms of lives lost, the toll of the COVID-19 pandemic should account for both the direct and indirect effects of the virus. Excess mortality, which occurs when there are more deaths during a period of time than what would be typical for that period, is one key measure that accounts for these effects. Statistics Canada used provisional data on deaths in Canada to produce provisional death estimates, which have been adjusted to account for the incomplete nature of the data due to reporting delays. These are in turn used with a measure of the number of deaths that would be expected to be observed were there no pandemic to produce an estimate of excess mortality. The provincial and territorial results are discussed.

Despite the various resources that are available for families of children with disabilities, relatively little is known about the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on families of children with disabilities. The purpose of this report is to examine differences in experiences between families of children with and without disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic as reported by parents or guardians of children aged 0 to 14 years.
Canadians’ willingness to get a COVID-19 vaccine: Group differences and reasons for vaccine hesitancy
The development of a COVID-19 vaccine has been identified as a key factor in ending the pandemic and returning to normal activities. Although a COVID-19 vaccine is not yet available, its success will ultimately depend on the proportion of the population who are willing to be vaccinated. This study examines Canadians’ willingness to get a COVID-19 vaccine, group differences and Canadians’ reasons for not intending to get a COVID-19 vaccine are examined.
COVID-19 testing: Do Canadians plan to get tested and why?
While access to COVID-19 testing has become more widely available, little is known about the extent to which Canadians intend to get tested for the virus and the reasons why they would request a test. This study aims to shed light on the reasons why Canadians would get tested for COVID-19 if testing were widely available and examines whether certain groups are more likely than others to indicate that they would get tested.
Canadians’ support for random COVID-19 testing
Given the need for timely and accurate evidence of the impact of COVID-19 in the wider population, knowledge of Canadians’ attitudes toward a strategy of random COVID-19 testing is useful information for policy makers and public health officials. This study examines the extent to which crowdsourcing participants support random testing for COVID-19, with a focus on differences by sociodemographic characteristics as well as trust levels in governments and public health authorities.
Transitions into and out of employment by immigrants during the COVID-19 lockdown and recovery
During the widespread lockdown of economic activities in March and April 2020, the Canadian labour market lost 3 million jobs. From May to July, as many businesses gradually resumed their operations, 1.7 million jobs were recovered. While studies in the United States and Europe suggest that immigrants are often more severely affected by economic downturns than the native born, little is known about whether immigrants and the Canadian born fared differently in the employment disruption induced by the COVID-19 pandemic and, if so, how such differences are related to their socio-demographic and job characteristics. This paper fills this gap by comparing immigrants and the Canadian-born population in their transitions out of employment in the months of heavy contraction and into employment during the months of partial recovery.

This article examines the willingness of Canadians to use tracing applications, whether or not they feel comfortable sharing the data with government officials, and reasons why they would not use the applications. Additionally, differences on these perceptions and reasons of using or not using tracing applications are explored by demographic characteristics including region, sex, and age.

This study is based on a survey carried out in June and July, 2020, which asked a sample of victim services about the changes that they had experienced in the number of victims they had served, factors that affected their ability to provide services, and how they had adapted their operations in order to continue to serve victims.
Child care use during and after the COVID-19 pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically altered the way of life for Canadian families, parents, and children. Physical distancing and the impact on employment has meant that parents have altered their usual routines and supports, and many children and families have been isolated in their homes for months. The purpose of this report is to provide a snapshot of the child care experiences of parents and families with children less than 15 years of age both during and after child care closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
To what extent might COVID-19 affect the earnings of the class of 2020?
The COVID-19 pandemic has already resulted in a considerable slowdown in economic activity in Canada. Young people have been hit particularly hard. This article presents estimates of the cumulative earnings losses in the first five years after graduation that this year’s graduating class could experience, depending on the depth of the economic downturn. Specifically, five scenarios for this year’s youth unemployment rate are examined.
Concerns over resuming activities in Canada
To combat the spread of COVID 19, in March, authorities prohibited all activities deemed non essential, disrupting the daily lives of all Canadians. Since then, activities have gradually begun to resume across Canada. This article examines the Canadians’ level of concern about the health risks of resuming activities. It also examines the relationship between respondents’ level of concern and their willingness to continue taking various precautions to reduce the risk of COVID 19 transmission.

Retail e-commerce and COVID-19: How online shopping opened doors while many were closing
In March 2020, new measures aimed at slowing the spread of COVID-19 significantly affected how consumers made retail purchases. With businesses closing and changing their in-store operations, and consumers having to physically distance, the option to purchase online became an important alternative to walking into a Canadian retail store. From February to May 2020, total retail sales fell 17.9%. However, retail e-commerce sales nearly doubled (+99.3%), with some retailers relying more on this method of sale.

Price trends and outlook in key Canadian housing markets
This article examines key housing markets in Canada prior to COVID-19 and offers an outlook of the impacts of the pandemic on the real estate market over the next few months. Price trends for four property types, such as new houses, new condominiums, resale houses and resale condominiums are explored. Prior to COVID-19, the price of condominium apartments increased at a faster pace than singles, semi-detached and row homes. The global pandemic may cause a shift of preferences for larger homes instead of condominiums as future home buyers may prefer larger homes in the suburbs as working from home becomes more prevalent.

As governments start to relax protective health measures and open up more businesses and recreational facilities, the amount of direct interactions with others will likely increase for most people. Many Canadians will likely feel relieved to get back to a more 'normal' life, but many others may be more fearful. Using data collected in mid-June, this article examines which groups of people feel more afraid of unwanted or intimidating acts as a result of perceived exposure risk to COVID-19.

This article also discuss the mental health differences between recent immigrants, established immigrants and Canadian born.

Using data from a recent crowdsourcing initiative, this article examines the perceptions of personal safety from crime among visible minority groups in Canada since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study also looks at their perceptions of incidents of harassment or attacks on the basis of race, ethnic origin, or skin colour in their neighbourhood.
Canada’s oil and gas sector: The decline in production and investment and the impact on the economy
The oil and gas industry is an important contributor to the Canadian economy, especially in Alberta. From the year 2000 onwards, its share in the total economy averaged about 5% of Canadian and 21% of Albertan GDP. The recent decline in oil prices will have a large impact on Canada's oil and gas industry, which in turn will affect other industries. This article estimates the economic impact of the potential decline in production and investment in the oil and gas industry due to recent shocks on the Canadian economy.
Canadians’ willingness to get a COVID-19 vaccine when one becomes available: What role does trust play?
The degree to which individuals have trust in policy makers and public health authorities has been associated with their willingness to engage in public health measures such as vaccinations (Dubé et al. 2013; Greenberg, Dubé and Driedger 2017). This study examines how crowdsourcing participants’ willingness to receive a COVID-19 vaccination when one becomes available differs by their level of trust in other people, government and public health authorities. Results from this study cannot be inferred to the overall Canadian population.
Concerns and precautions taken in the Canadian North during the pandemic
The study examines the precautions and concerns of participants who responded to a crowdsourcing initiative between April 3 and April 25 and who reported that they were living in the Canadian North. Results are presented separately for Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut.
Economic impact of COVID-19 among visible minority groups
The economic lockdown triggered by COVID-19 has led so far to disproportionate employment losses among lower-paid workers and young workers. Its impact on visible minorities is currently less known. Using data from a large crowdsourcing data collection initiative, the study further compares the degree to which visible minority participants: a) experienced job loss or reduced workhours since the onset of the pandemic, b) were strongly or moderately impacted financially, and c) applied for and received federal income support.

Over the past few decades, computer technology has gradually changed workplaces, leading to a reduction of routine and manual job tasks, and an increase in non-routine, cognitive tasks. More recent developments in artificial intelligence and machine learning could be even more far-reaching, as they are designed to execute tasks that were traditionally considered non-automatable.
Volunteering in Canada: Challenges and opportunities during the COVID-19 pandemic
Older generations are more likely than younger generations to be self-isolating and limiting their volunteer activities during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, the pandemic has had a series of impacts that vary depending on the type of volunteer organization. Physical distancing and necessary health protection measures quickly affected the provision of face-to-face services, events and meetings involving gatherings of people. At the same time, recent media reports have highlighted many examples of individuals directly assisting others, including picking-up and dropping-off groceries and other supplies in the community, cooking meals, sewing non-medical masks, sharing information and providing emotional support via online social media platforms. Using data from the 2018 General Social Survey on Giving, Volunteering and Participating (GSS GVP), this article documents how people of various generations contribute to volunteering in Canada. Although these data predate the COVID-19 pandemic, they provide an overview of the challenges and opportunities of volunteering in the current situation.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused unprecedented job losses in Canada, impacts that can increase the number of Canadians who are susceptible to income-related food insecurity. This article is based on data collected during the week of May 4 to 10, 2020, and looks at the populations who reported experiencing food insecurity due to financial difficulties.
Indigenous people and mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic
This study reports on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of Indigenous people in Canada, based on data from a recent crowdsourcing initiative. Data on self-perceived mental health as well as on feelings of anxiety among Indigenous people since the onset of physical distancing are presented. Comparisons are made between Indigenous women and men and between Indigenous and non-Indigenous participants.

COVID-19 and job displacement: Thinking about the longer term
It is too early to know how many Canadian workers will lose their job, i.e. will be permanently laid-off, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and what will happen to them financially after job loss. Yet a number of stylized facts emerge from the past. While these facts do not necessarily allow accurate predictions of the impact of the pandemic on job displacement, they provide a long-term perspective from which forthcoming labour market developments can be assessed. This article assesses how the feasibility of working from home varies across Canadian families. It also considers the implications of these differences for family earnings inequality.

Between April 3 and April 25, approximately a quarter of a million people answered a questionnaire on how the COVID-19 pandemic was affecting their lives, based on a new method of data collection called crowdsourcing. This study examines how the concerns and attitudes of participants changed over time by comparing the answers provided by participants in the first week of data collection to the answers of those who answered in the second and third week of data collection.
