Common Questions

Library Services

Library services are for CURRENT students and employees. Limited services are available for community borrowers.

Students that are not currently attending will be expired and do not have full access to the library any more but can apply for a community borrower card (free) or if they've graduated, they can fill in an alumni form and receive a community borrower card for free for one year.  When setting up a Community borrower card, set them to expire in one year.  They can be renewed (for another year) by the borrower at that time, and so on.  When setting up a Community borrower card, please make sure you have an email address and a phone number (along with the rest of the info).

It is always OK to ask:

  • "Are you currently a student?"
  • "Were you told to buy your books at the bookstore
or to borrow your books from the library?"

Common Questions

"How late are you open today?" "Are you open on Sunday?" Have an idea before you start your shift as to when the library closes that day.  Check on the OC library website for library hours if need be.

"Is this the bookstore?" or "Where is the bookstore?" The book store is in the S building. Check the website for open hours.

"Can I get my book in the library or do I have to buy it? "

  • Academic class or Trades - books need to be purchased from the bookstore
  • ELL (English Language) - most books are loaned from library but some need to be purchased (ask Joanne)
  • AU (Adult Upgrading) -  all the books are loaned through the library (sometimes we are short of books if books haven't been returned from previous semester)

"I need to book a study room!"
Go to the Library webpage and click on Book a study room on Kelowna.

"I would like to check out a laptop." Students must be current students and have filled in a laptop borrowers agreement. A note must be created in Folio to show that they have filled in the laptop agreement form.  A current student ID card must be presented to sign out a laptop.

"I can't login?"  Are they a current student?  If not, then their log in has been deactivated. If they are a current student, then they can reset their password by clicking on log into myokangan and from there choosing reset password, if still problem send them to IT or call 4444

"What software is available on the library student computers?" Lots! Check at the Circulation Desk in the library or contact IT Services

"I requested a book from Kelowna and live in Vernon. When will it arrive?" Check the inter-campus delivery schedule (posted on other side of back circ counter). OC stores picks up bins first thing in the morning on delivery days so bins need to be taken downstairs to counter in Technical Services the afternoon of the day before a stores delivery. If an item is needed urgently, we have a contract with ACE Courier and details can be found in procedures manual

"I need to have a test invigilated. Can I get that done here?" OC has a testing centre - in the C building on the 2nd floor - Search the OC website for Kelowna Testing Centre or click here Kelowna Testing Centre

"I'm a community member. Can I get a library card?"  Yes and it's free.  The Community borrower cards are in the drawer where the calculators are.  The 'people' barcodes are in one of the slots at circ counter.  In Folio, go to Users and under Actions choose new, and add the persons information.  Remember that email and phone number are very important to take down as that is how we contact them if something is overdue.  Set the card to expire one year from the current date. They can come in at that time and renew the card for one year, and so on. There is no access to OC library databases, but physical books & DVDs can be checked out.  Detailed instructions are in the Procedures manual.

"I'm an alumni or a retired employee. How do I get a library card?"  Library cards for alumni and retired employees (COMMUNITY CARDS) are good for life but need to be renewed yearly.  This allows us to update any changes to their personal information.  Alumni can fill in an online form linked on the library webpage. The alumni form is emailed to the alumni office where they approve it. The approved form will be sent to Circ_KEL whereby we can create a library card for them and change their 300# status in Folio to COMMUNITY.  Retired employees can either email us or come in and we can look them up, make up a community library card, and change their status to COMMUNITY in Folio.
