"Contrary to the myth of a pristine green country providing environmental leadership to the world, a large body of evidence proves beyond a reasonable doubt that Canada lags behind other nations in terms of environmental performance. According to researchers at Simon Fraser University, Canada's environmental performance ranks twenty-fourth out of the twenty-five wealthiest nations in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The OECD has published blistering critiques of Canada’s weak laws and policies, perverse subsidies for unsustainable industries, and poor environmental performance."

By 2017, the OECD opinion of Canada's environmental performance had significantly changed. "They found that Canada's federal government has established ambitious environmental goals and has re-affirmed its commitment to fight climate change and support clean economic growth through its unwavering support for the Paris Agreement".
