Researching with Artificial Intelligence

MLA

Works Cited

According to the online MLA Guide, when creating a Works Cited entry for something generated by AI, you should use the following format

[“A quoted description of your prompt” prompt.] [The name of the AI service in italics,] [the name of the version, including the date if available,] [The name of the company.] [the date of the prompt,] [ [a link to the conversation if possible and if not, the tool.]

This would then look something like this:

Describe the role of women in 1984” prompt. ChatGPT, GPT-5. OpenAI, 29 Aug. 2025, chat.openai.com/chat.

Notice that you are not asked to list an author. This is because AI does not meet Cambridge’s requirements for authorship.

In-Text Citation

In place of the usual author surname and page number you would use for an MLA in-text citation, if you’re quoting or paraphrasing AI, you will simply use the text of your prompt in the parenthetical citation, as shown below:

Resistance is seen in Julia especially, “who outwardly appears to conform to the Party’s expectations—participating in Youth League activities and presenting a seemingly loyal façade—but privately rebels through her sexual relationships and small acts of subversion" (“describe the role of women in 1984”).
