Canadian Multiculturalism

Fifty-two years ago, on October 8, 1971, Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau rose in the House of Commons and declared multiculturalism would be adopted as official Canadian public policy. As a result, Canada would recognize and respect diversity in languages, customs, and religions, etc. 

In 1982, multiculturalism was recognized by section 27 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms,

Multicultural heritage

27 This Charter shall be interpreted in a manner consistent with the preservation and enhancement of the multicultural heritage of Canadians.

In 1988, Prime Minister Brian Mulroney enacted the Canadian Multiculturalism Act
