Government of Canada Workplace Equity Program: 

  1. encourages the establishment of working conditions that are free from barriers

  2. seeks to correct conditions of disadvantage in employment, and

  3. promotes the principle that it requires special measures to accommodate differences for the 4 designated groups in Canada:

  • Women

  • Indigenous peoples

  • Persons with disabilities

  • Members of visible minorities

 

Oversight of the legislation is vested with the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

BC Workplace

B.C.’s Human Rights Code requires employers in the province to uphold workers’ human rights and maintain a work environment free from discrimination. Employment equity goes beyond creating a discrimination-free work environment. It’s about employers taking action to remove and prevent barriers at work for workers who belong to groups that have often been treated unfairly, for example, because of their race, age, gender or disability.
