OC Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility in Libraries (IDEAL)

This guide outlines the Okanagan College IDEAL mission, EDIA-goals, and recommended EDIA-related resources.

Priority 1

Priority 1: Create opportunities for understanding historical and continuing inequities experienced by equity-deserving groups (ex. White supremacy, heteronormativity, ableism, etc.) 

Goal 1.1: Develop diverse collections that meaningfully represent equity-deserving groups

Goal 1.2: Organize educational events and activities that create opportunities to explore and critically engage with historical and ongoing inequities experienced by equity-deserving groups. 

Goal 1.3: Use asynchronous outreach as opportunities to educate about historical and ongoing inequities experienced by equity-deserving groups and promote items from the collection that provide further education about this.

Priority 2

Priority 2: Establish organizational practices that hold the library and library workers accountable for creating inclusive, equitable, and accessible spaces 

Goal 2.1: Recruit and retain a diverse pool of employees 

Goal 2.2: Create and promote adaptable, accessible, inclusive, and welcoming physical and digital spaces  

Goal 2.3: Ensure that access to information is equitable and free from discrimination  

Goal 2.4: Regularly assess the library’s commitment to and implementation of IDEAL priorities and use the assessment to plan further goals and actions 

Priority 3

Priority 3: Influence and affect changes in other spheres

Goal 3.1: Leverage existing institution-wide committees and/or working groups as a vector to share IDEAL priorities, goals, and actions 

Goal 3.2: Engage with community-of-practice networks and professional associations to learn new ideas and share OC library’s IDEAL initiatives
