Specific Claims Tribunal Act

The Specific Claims Tribunal Act was the result of Indigenous Nations bringing forward grievances that needed to be resolved regarding treaty obligations or the administration of Indigenous lands and assets under the Indian Act.

The Specific Claims Tribunal was created in 2008, as an independent judicial body with the authority to make final and binding decisions in such matters.

The purpose of this Act is to establish the Specific Claims Tribunal, the mandate of which is to decide issues of validity and compensation relating to specific claims of First Nations.
Specific Claims Tribunal Canada
The Specific Claims Tribunal, established on October 16, 2008, is part of the Federal Government’s Justice at Last policy and joint initiative with the Assembly of First Nations aimed at accelerating the resolution of specific claims in order to provide justice for First Nations claimants and certainty for government, industry and all Canadians.
