Private vs. Public Company

Public Company

A public company "is a corporation whose shareholders have a claim to part of the company's assets and profits. It's also called a publicly traded company" (Investopedia, 2023).  Information on publicly traded companies is often readily available online, as they are, generally speaking, legally mandated to submit and/or publish their information.

Private Company

A private company is "owned by founders, executive management, and private investors" (Investopedia, 2024). Since private companies are not required to publish or share their information, researching about private companies are much more challenging.

Public Company Research

Incorporated (public) companies distribute their annual reports to shareholders and are, generally speaking, required by regulations. Typically annual reports include audited financial statements and information on the company's performance.
