Copyright at Okanagan College

Your lectures

Under the Copyright Act, and according to Okanagan College agreements, an Instructor or College Professor owns the copyright of their lectures. As a result, students must ask for and get explicit permission from the instructor, before the start of any lecture, if they wish to record that lecture.

Course materials

Under the Copyright Act, and according to Okanagan College agreements, an Instructor or College Professor generally owns the copyright of the material they create for courses. Any material you create is automatically copyrighted whether or not you include a copyright notice.

Permissions and copyright statements

While you maintain copyright of your materials whether or not you include a copyright statement, it may provide clarity to students if you have a statement about what they are or are not allowed to do with your course material.

Different options for incorporating copyright statements in your course material:

1. A basic copyright statement: © with your name and date

2. A more detailed statement about intellectual property rights and permissible uses. See Brock University's examples of statements for course syllabi and individual materials

3. Include a Creative Commons license. You retain copyright while using a standard way for authors to put their work in "the commons." See the Creative Commons tab in this guide for more information.

Student work

Any original student-generated content such as an essay, artwork, website or video is copyright protected. You must obtain written permission from the student if you want to use their work.
