Occupational and sex differences in active commuting among Canadian workers from 2006 to 2016Physical activity (PA) plays an important role in preventing chronic diseases and premature mortality. Adults are recommended to accumulate 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous intensity PA per week. However, most Canadian adults do not meet this recommendation. Active transportation refers to using human-powered means to get around, such as walking and cycling. Although public transit use is not generally considered a mode of active transportation, research has shown that individuals who use transit often cycle or walk to access transit stops, helping transit users accumulate PA. Active transportation is also linked to physical and mental health benefits, as well as environmental health benefits because of its low carbon footprint.
