Literature Review: Finding & Identifying Research

Literature Review: A survey of information found in scholarly articles, books, and other literature related to an area of study. A presentation of references on a given topic, found through a carefully structured clinical question and in-depth research. 

  • Describes, summarizes, evaluates and clarifies prior research.

  • Not only summarizes other research, also examines the relationship.

  • Determines what has already been investigated, identifies potential relationships, defines key concepts, and relates to research already completed.

  • Considers different disciplines topic may cover.

Because of the sheer enormity and constantly growing body of health sciences literature, the nursing profession has developed leading-edge methods for identifying and evaluating scholarly information.  These include:
