What is a census?
"A census is an official count of the citizens who live in a particular country. It is used to get an accurate picture of a country's size and the characteristics of the people who live there."

What information is collected in Canada's census?
The census counts everyone living in Canada as well as "Canadian citizens and landed immigrants who are temporarily outside Canada on Census Day." Additionally, "the census gathers information on the socio-economic characteristics of the population."

How did the 2011 Census differ from other years?
"The 2011 Census Program consisted of two parts: a short questionnaire (census) with a basic set of questions distributed to 100% of households, and a long questionnaire (National Household Survey) distributed to a 33% sample of households.
The 2011 Census questionnaire consists of the same eight questions that appeared on the 2006 Census short-form questionnaire along with two additional language questions - one on the knowledge of official languages and the other on home language(s). The information previously collected by the long-form census questionnaire is collected by the voluntary National Household Survey (NHS)"
