WET 219 - Applied Water Law

Walkerton

In May 2000, Walkerton, a small, picturesque, town, located on Ontario's Bruce Penninsula, in the Municipality of Brockton, had its drinking water system contaminated with the potentially deadly bacteria, Escherichia coli O157:H7. Seven people died, and more than 2,300 became ill.  The Government of Ontario convened an Inquiry charged with determining what had led to this situation and making recommendations in order to prevent future occurrences of similar situations. The Commissioner of the inquiry was Dennis R. O'Connor, a Justice of the Court of Appeal for Ontario.

Walkerton served as a wake-up call for all Provincial governments in Canada. in B.C. it directly impacted the development of the Drinking Water Protection Act.  See the Final Report Panel of British Columbia's Drinking Water Protection Act, Lessons From Part One of the Walkerton Inquiry page 6.
