The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) provides comparable and actionable data and information that are used to accelerate improvements in health care, health system performance and population health across Canada. Their stakeholders use our broad range of health system databases, measurements and standards, together with our evidence-based reports and analyses, in their decision-making processes. They protect the privacy of Canadians by ensuring the confidentiality and integrity of the health care information we provide.
The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) is a pan-Canadian initiative involving Health Canada and provincial/territorial governments that was envisioned as a means to improve analysis and access to health information in Canada in 1988. By 1994, two independent institutions, the Hospital Medical Records Institute (HMRI) and the Management Information System (MIS) Group, were merged to create CIHI. CIHI, in April 2024, employed 814 staff in four locations in Canada (Ottawa, Toronto, Victoria and Montreal).
