This report was published prior to the Covid-19 Pandemic in 2018. Canada’s population is aging. The proportion of seniors in the Canadian population will rise from 16.9% to 21.0% over the next 10 years. The provinces and territories are struggling to meet the care needs of our
aging population, and over the next 10 years population aging will add $93 billion to health care costs.

Funding increases, pan-Canadian collaboration and changes in health service delivery across the country have set the stage for new conversations about how to move forward. This estimates program provides quarterly estimates of total population for Canada, provinces and territories.

This estimates program is used in the calculation of demographic, social and economic indicators. Estimated population counts play a vital role under the Federal-Provincial Fiscal Arrangements and Federal Post-Secondary Education and Health Contributions Act, as well as with the Canada Student Loans Act, in determining the amounts of federal-provincial-territorial transfers. In addition, the data helps in the determination of the annual level of immigration by the Government of Canada.

Postcensal estimates are based on the 2021 Census counts adjusted for census net undercoverage and incompletely enumerated reserves and settlements.

This report presents the results of the population projections by age group and sex for Canada, the provinces and territories. These projections are based on assumptions that take into account the most recent trends relating to components of population growth, particularly fertility, mortality, immigration, emigration and interprovincial migration.

Estimates: A population estimate is a measure of the current or historical population. BC Stats annually releases total population estimates for sub-provincial region types. These estimates are consistent in aggregate with the July 1st provincial level estimates produced by Statistics Canada. More information can be found on BC Stats' Population Estimates page.

Projections: A population projection is a forecast of future population growth. BC Stats applies the Component/Cohort-Survival method to project the population. This method "grows" the population from the latest base year estimate by forecasting births, deaths and migration by age. These forecasts are based on past trends modified to account for possible future changes and, consequently, should be viewed as only one possible scenario of future population.
