Reading will introduce you to new words and reinforce the words you already know. You should read whatever interests you. Initially, when your vocabulary is very limited, reading may be difficult. Persevere. Begin with reading easy texts. The OC library has readers of different levels so you can find a good match for your ability.
When you read or hear a word you do not understand, make the effort to take a closer look. First, try to guess the meaning from the context, then later, look up the word in a dictionary. Make a note of the word in a notebook of new words or on index cards.
Whether on-line or as a book, most people know how to use a dictionary, but here are some tips for using a dictionary to help build vocabulary:
Review the new vocabulary little and often. Set aside a specific time each day to do this. Fifteen minutes each day will give you better results than 30 minutes each week. Be consistent, systematic and focused in your practice. Set a goal for how many words you will learn by when. To review the words effectively, all the words should be kept in one place – in a notebook, or on a set of index cards.
Along with reviewing your words, it is very helpful to make an effort to use the new words in conversations or in your writing.
