Data in this table has been gathered as part of the Monthly New Motor Vehicle Sales Survey (NMVS). This survey collects data on monthly retail sales (in dollars and in units) of new motor vehicles sold in Canada. The interest in and need for detailed statistics on the automobile industry arose when the industry began playing a prominent role in the Canadian economy. For over 50 years, Statistics Canada has been collecting and disseminating statistical information on the retail sales of new motor vehicles. Not only are these statistics required to produce estimates of Canadian consumer spending for inclusion in the national accounts and the gross domestic product, but they have also served and continue to serve as one of the most important, most often requested indicators of the health of Canada's economy.

December 9, 2015 — OTTAWA, ON — Competition Bureau Toyo Tire & Rubber Co., Ltd. (Toyo), a Japanese manufacturer of automobile and truck tires and other rubber components, pleaded guilty today to three counts of bid‑rigging under the Competition Act and was fined $1.7 million for its participation in an international bid‑rigging conspiracy related to the supply of anti‑vibration components to Toyota Motor Corp., Ltd. (Toyota).

From April 2013 to October 2018, the Bureau’s auto parts bid‑rigging investigation resulted in 13 guilty pleas and more than $86 million in fines, including several of the largest bid‑rigging fines ever imposed by the courts in Canada.
