Used Tires

There are no special regulations governing the sales of used tires in Canada. Used tires are governed under Canada’s Motor Vehicle Safety Act and Motor Vehicle Tire Safety Regulation and the provincial legislation and regulations in B.C. These would be the Motor Vehicle Act [RSBC 1996] Chapter 318 and B.C. Motor Vehicle Act Regulations.

When purchasing used tires, it is a caveat emptor (let the buyer beware) situation.

Perspectives on the North American Used Tire Market

Retreaded Tires

New tire remanufacturing technology can produce tires that are almost identical to new tires. Often referred to as retread tires, these tires were not always highly regarded by vehicle operators. But with the new technologies they have penetrated the commercial and industrial tire marketplace today.

However, smaller-sized vehicles such as cars, passenger trucks, and one-ton trucks that use light-truck tires typically are not equipped with remanufactured tires.
