Data Science (DSCI) 490/491 Capstone Research Guide

Statistics Canada, through their flagship publication The Daily, releases a monthly report summarizing the retail trade in Canada. 

Access the Monthly retail commodity sales (x 1,000) Table: 20-10-0080-01 Release date: 2025-09-08. 

This is an interactive table created using data from the Retail Commodity Survey.  

It provides the user with the ability to customize the report by clicking on the Add/Remove data button   located on the right side of the webpage, directly above the data section. 

Before starting, make sure that the North American Product Classification System (NAPCS) sub-categories have been cleared. 

The Easiest way to do this is to turn the sub-categories on and then off by clicking on the four check boxes located below the heading Select specific level only.

The user can modify the table based on the following variables:

1. Select your Geography by clicking the available options in this table. The report is for Canada.

2. Select the appropriate North American Product Classification System (NAICS) code: Televisions and home audiovisual equipment, at retail = 5613164.

3. Now select your Reference period (date range by month and year this survey provided data for the time period January 2023 to present).

4.  Click the Apply  button to build your report.

5. Download the dataset by clicking the Download button
