Government of B.C. - Water Quality Assessment of the Fraser River Following the November 2021 Floods
In November 2021, the BC Lower Mainland experienced widespread intense precipitation during a series of extreme weather events, referred to as atmospheric rivers, that deposited over 150 mm of rainfall over two days. Water levels in the associated tributaries to the Lower Fraser River rose quickly, escaping their channels and flooding several low-lying areas in the Fraser Valley and Southern Interior regions. The 2021 atmospheric river event was the most costly severe weather event in the province’s history. As part of the response to flooding in the Lower Fraser River area, the Government of British Columbia, through the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy (ENV), completed a surface water quality assessment of the Lower Fraser River. The ENV deployed field teams to complete water quality assessments at five locations in the Lower Fraser River area in December 2021.
