Course Resource Lists with Talis Aspire

Introduction to OC's Online Resource List Software

Add Items to a List Using the Chrome Browser Extension

This extension can be used instead of the bookmarklet for adding resources to lists. Every site and resource recognized with the bookmarklet will also be recognized with the extension.

Step 1: Install the Extension to Chrome

  • On your computer, open Chrome.
  • Search for 'Talis' in the Chrome Web Store, or visit this link
  • Click Add to Chrome.
  • Some extensions will let you know if they need certain permissions or data. To approve, click Add extension.
  • To use the extension to bookmark an item, click the icon to the right of the browser's address bar (where a website URL appears).
  • Note: You can't add extensions when you browse in Incognito mode or as a guest.

Step 2: Add an item to a list using the extension

  • Navigate to a webpage, article, online resource, or catalogue record for an item you would like added to your resource list.
  • Click the browser extension button and it will open the bookmarking window.
  • Add any relevant metadata to supplement the information automatically pulled from the page.
  • Click save and add to list, then select the list you would like the resource added to. You can also click save and bookmark the item for later use.

Managing your Browser Extension

  • On your computer, open Chrome.
  • At the top right, click More More and then More tools and then Extensions. Options to manage:
    • Turn on/off: Turn the extension on or off.
    • Allow incognito: On the extension, click Details. Turn on Allow in incognito.
    • Fix corruptions: Find a corrupted extension and click Repair. Confirm by clicking Repair extension.
    • Allow site access: On the extension, click Details. Next to “Allow this extension to read and change all your data on websites you visit,” change the extension’s site access to On click, On specific sites, or On all sites.

Uninstall a Browser Extension

  • To the right of your address bar, look for the Talis extension icon. Right-click the icon and select Remove from Chrome.
  • If you don't see the extension's icon:
    • On your computer, open Chrome.
    • At the top right, click More More and then More tools and then Extensions.
    • On to the extension you want to remove, click Remove.
    • Confirm by clicking Remove.

Add Resources using Browser Bookmarklet

Using Talis Aspire’s Bookmarklet to add resources to your list from OC Library’s OCtopus search. Please note that steps are similar for adding resources from the internet.

  • After finding a resource in OCtopus (or a website), click through until you're on the information page
  • To ensure that you can easily edit the metadata and continue with your database searching, create another tab so that you have the information page open on both tabs
  • When you’re on the second tab, click on the Bookmarklet in your toolbar
  • Talis will open a page called “Bookmarking from” the vendor’s name (if you are using OCtopus, the vendor’s name will be EBSCOHost)
  • On this page, you can view and edit the descriptive data for the resource (depending on the database and resource, you might need to spend more time in editing the data)
  • If it’s an online resource, check the box next to the “Online Resource” (this will ensure students can easily access the source)
  • You can check to see where the online resource is linking (OC Library or the DOI), and make sure that it is linking to the item information page in OCtopus using a permalink
  • Click "Create & Add to List"
  • Decide which list you would like to add the resource to and which section or week of the list you want the resource to be in
  • Optional Steps: Add the importance and notes
  • In order to make changes to the Talis list in Moodle, you will need the full list (not broken down into sections) accessible in Moodle
  • Click "Publish" to add the sources you found in the Library or the internet (you might need to refresh the web page first)
  • Check the section or week to view your changes
